Bark & Bite

The Yin Yang of Freelancing

You can set your own hours…just so they are seven days a week.

You get lots of exercise going to the mailbox…to look for checks that aren't there.

Your mind-reading skills will blossom…figuring out what your clients want.

You learn to live the simple life…endlessly examined.

You know the IRS phone number…by heart.

Your personal banker knows you…by name.

THE SCRIBBLES STORY

One day, we were commiserating via work-avoiding emails about the state of the freelance design and writing business and decided this puppy needed to lighten up.

The demeaning pittances offered on Craigs, the profane rejoinders when one pointed out to a lister the error of his or her cheesy ways, the lag times in payment from people who were getting a corporate check every two weeks like clockwork, the nits, the picks, the unanswered queries....We were getting a tad discouraged.

Then, Scribbles came into our lives. Our faithful canine companion, our protector, our invoice collector, our unconditionally loving pal.

We love dogs. We believe the outside of a dog is good for the inside of a person.

Wouldn't other writers, designers and sensitive creatives also like to adopt Scribbles? And thus...Writer's Catablog was born.

Now that we've created it, how can we change it? You know how fertile brains work. In the words of Tim, the Tool Man Taylor, "If it's not broke, you can still fix it."

—Star & Nancy

Scribbles'
Mouthpieces

Nancy McKeithen and Star Lawrence started this site to amuse themselves out in the brutal world of fulltime freelancing. Now suitably amused, they are looking for compatible clients. Hellooo, out there.

Nancy has more than 20 years of experience in writing, editing, sales and marketing. As if that weren't enough, she is a graphic designer, too, thus using that all-important other side of her brain. Her clients are smart companies that appreciate quality. You can see her portfolio on nancymckeithen.com.

Star had the dubious privilege of starting at the top by writing a cover piece for Washingtonian while still a Hill lobbyist. After a late-in-life baby, she stayed home and worked her way through the association and magazine worlds. Now a health reporter and blogger for WebMD and others, she specializes in health, homeland security, high-tech case studies and educational policy. For more info, go to her website. For health news with a dose of irony, go to her blog.
